Ohio Category 10A General Pest Control prepares candidates for general structural and household pest work. The category examination contains 150 questions, with a 70% passing score. Preparation involves more than recognizing a pest photograph: you need to connect identification with inspection findings, food and shelter sources, development stages and suitable control methods. Check the Ohio Department of Agriculture category descriptions before selecting your examinations so that your intended work fits the certification you are pursuing.
Study General Pest Control: A Study Guide for Commercial Applicators, OSU e841-10A, 2025 edition. OSU identifies this updated manual with the examination introduced April 1, 2025. Its product page also directs readers to replacement corrections for printed pages 1 and 207. Check those official corrections against your copy before studying. Read Chapter 1 on laws and regulations as part of the full category manual even though this practice bank concentrates on pest and application knowledge.
Use Chapters 2 and 3 to organize your inspection and monitoring process. Then review Chapter 4 on application equipment, Chapter 5 on specialized facilities and Chapter 6 on insect and arthropod biology. Practice calculating delivery rates and mixture quantities while keeping weight and fluid measures separate. For sensitive facilities, consider how occupants, food, equipment and potential exposure affect the treatment decision. Write down the inspection evidence needed before selecting a product or an application method.
Work through the pest chapters in groups. Chapters 7 through 10 cover cockroaches, ants, stored-product and fabric pests, and silverfish, firebrats and book lice. Chapters 11 through 14 address parasites, flies and related pests, stinging insects and spiders. Finish with occasional and fall invaders, wood-destroying insects, and rats, mice and voles in Chapters 15 through 17. Compare similar pests by habitat, damage, life cycle and monitoring clues. Learning to recognize a wood-destroying insect does not by itself establish authorization for every treatment; consult ODA about category boundaries for the work you plan.
You must also pass Commercial Core for Ohio commercial certification. Keep Core safety, label and legal study alongside your category reading. The questions here are original study aids, not released ODA questions. The free question set here is smaller than the official 150-question examination, so the mock exam is shorter. Use it to locate weak topics, then return to the full manual rather than treating one practice run as complete exam coverage.
ODA inspectors supervise closed-book examinations at Ohio test sites, and the examination fee is $0. License charges are separate. Follow the ODA applicator-exams source below for official registration and current session rules. Ask ODA about the time allowance and appointment requirements when you book; we have not established a category-specific time limit. Rehearse answering without reference materials so that your study habits match the closed-book setting.
