Florida's Chapter 487 General Standards/Core exam covers general pesticide application knowledge, with 50 questions, two hours and a 70% passing score, as listed in UF/IFAS publication PI292. Before studying, check that Chapter 487 Core belongs to the license you need. PI292 explains the licensing routes and their required examinations. Limited Commercial Landscape Maintenance, or LCLM, is a separate Chapter 482 certificate examination. Its reading list includes the Core book, but that does not mean every LCLM applicant must also take Chapter 487 Core.
Build your reading plan around Applying Pesticides Correctly: A Guide for Pesticide Applicators, identified as SM1 or SM001. FDACS lists the seventh edition; the UF bookstore describes copyright 2014 with a 2015 revision/reprint. Use those details together when checking the book rather than treating the dates as separate new editions. UF lists the manual at $33 and provides chapter topics in its catalog. Turn those topics into a study checklist and revisit any chapter behind a missed practice answer.
For additional storage review, UF hosts Proper Storage of Pesticides, a November 2020 supplement with CEU review questions. Use it to work through storage decisions, keeping in mind that its questions are continuing-education material rather than a released Core entrance exam. When reviewing any practice question, explain why the answer fits the situation and which condition would change your decision. That approach is especially useful for label restrictions, handling precautions and protective equipment.
Our questions cover general knowledge from the national core manual; study SM1 and official Florida materials for the full state syllabus and Florida law. Work through a practice set, locate the principle behind each mistake in your reading, and write a short correction before moving on. Keep licensing questions separate from general safety review: use PI292 and FDACS guidance to resolve which credential and exams your intended work requires.
Testing is closed book. FDACS is the licensing authority, and UF's testing transition notice directs candidates to Everblue for this exam from October 1, 2025. Follow the FDACS certification page and that notice for booking instructions. Check your selected delivery option rather than relying on older county pages that describe Extension-office testing. The UF notice lists Everblue proctoring at $32 remotely or $59 at a test center. PI292's historical $0 state examination fee does not make the appointment free. These proctoring charges are separate from license fees; check the applicable costs and appointment instructions before paying, then prepare to test without your study book.
